Gysbert Oostlander

Gysbert Bert Oostlander, age 71, died Friday, September 7, 2012 at Candler Hospital following a short illness.

He was born on August 17, 1941 in Rotterdam, Holland to the late Gerrit and Johanna Oostlander. His family immigrated to the United States in February 1958, settling in Detroit, Michigan. He moved to Savannah in 1974, where he lived for the remainder of his life.

He served in the United States Army as a draftsman for the Comptroller's office after graduating from high school in 1959. He had the privilege of serving on the Honor Guard for the funeral of John F. Kennedy in 1963. He completed his obligation to the U.S. Army, became a U.S. Citizen and was honorably discharged December 14, 1963.

He was a very successful businessman, who owned several motels and restaurants in his early career. But his true passion had always been racing and showing pigeons. In 1989, he and his wife opened Global Pigeon Supplies, which still remains in business today. He is very well respected in the pigeon world. He was active in many pigeon club associations and was a certified judge of pigeons. He has had many newspaper articles written on his dedication, passion and knowledge of pigeons.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, grandson, Christopher Oostlander and brother, Frank Oostlander.

Surviving are his wife Wendy Oostlander of Savannah, GA., his daughter and son-in-law Julie and Glenn Evans of Savannah, GA., his son and daughter-in-law Bobby and Tammy Oostlander of Ellabell, GA., his daughter Jackie Akins of Savannah, GA., his daughter and son-in-law Tanya and Mark Green of Seattle, WA.
